I saw in wikipedia that tin can be used as a ceremonial dirk. And that dirk was forged ages ago. how much more now?

I have a 3 1/2 folding knife given to me by a friend for use in self-defense but I haven’t taken it out yet because I don’t know if I need a permit to carry it. If/when I do bring it with me, it would be when I walk around the downtown area of a city. Does anyone know if I would need a permit to carry it? John S- I am 19 and live on a college campus where carrying a gun would be illegal but my knife isn’t, but thank you for the suggestion…

John B- My knife is never to cause someone harm unless I believe that I am in strong and immediate danger of being kidnapped, raped, violently robbed, or worse… the knife isn’t really sharp (I can run my finger along it and it doesn’t even hurt) but I suppose it could look a little intimidating and all I’d want is for a possible attacker to step back so i could escape… I suppose I might be just paranoid but I’m from a rural area and now have to go into the city a lot by myself which makes me nervous
