Simon J asked:

I have been away from the UK for a number of years and need to know where the laws stand on carrying a knife in a camping situation that will be used for gutting fish and rabbits?

No it is not illeagel as many to it to gut fish or to cut there tackle. It is different if u threaten someone with it.

It depends how big it is and your intended purpose. I think your allowed up to 4 inch with good reason and camping is one but it has to be like one what is safe. E.G one that folds away

The legalities involved depend on several factors. First, the length of the knife, second what service (federal, state, local) has jurisdiction over the park. Third, and probably most importantly, your attitude should something happen.

I don’t know of any parks that completely ban knives in the outdoors, but many ban certain types of knives. A lot of places allow 3-4 inch blades but nothing larger. Some places only allow folding blades, and no fixed-blade knives. Some allow you to carry whatever you feel is necessary.

If you’re just carrying a knife for routine use, and don’t plan on marking up the territory with it, or clear-cutting your way through the brush, you shouldn’t have a problem.

I’m not sure but I’ve just read that the UK government is planning a ban on kitchen knives with sharp point and certain length.
So, the idea of restrictions on knives for civil use is not a joke anymore.
Be prepared to carve your roast with plastic knives and eat with chopsticks.

With all the Irish Pikeys I’d say a knife is a minimum requirement today. Take an axe as well oh and a bar of soap, it’s like garlic to a vampire

    OH MAN!
Is it really so bad some places? I couldn’t imagine a country where I couldn’t carry a gun, but a knife? I’m glad I live in a small town in Arizona. Wish I knew something about carrying a knife in the UK, sorry.

I think its all about how sensible you are with the knife.

Obviously, walking down the highstreet with a knife with an uncovered 4 blade (or more) in your hand is illegal and you would rightly get stopped by the police. You could walk down the same highstreet with the same knife packed in a rucksack and be OK – the reason being that you cant access the knife quickly enough to hurt someone.

In the country, again its all about how sensible you are, if you are activly using the knife as you should (gutting a fish or rabbit) then you should be OK, if, you are walking through the woods with the blade uncovered and in your hand, then people would have a reason to object, call the police or whatever.

So best advise is a sensible blade (4-6), blade covered untill needed and stored in a bag or fishing takle box untill needed, and put away again afterwards. Often I carry a knife – always sheethed untill needed and carried in a rucksac or kept in my tent untill needed and never had a problem.
